Despite participating in contact sports from early childhood through college, my number of severe injuries is surprisingly small. The only real debilitating injury that I suffered came when I broke my leg in the middle of ninth grade football season. Although the injury was relatively minor, it opened my eyes to some of the everyday tasks that I often take for granted.
One such task was taking a shower. For six weeks I had to put my leg into a specially designed plastic bag to ensure that no moisture reached the cast. It also was virtually impossible to balance on one leg while I was in the shower, so I also had to invest in a shower bench. I used to think that shower chairs were simply for the elderly, but I witnessed first hand one of their many other uses.
