Transfer Bench

We have discussed Activities of Daily Living in prior posts. One of these activities is transferring. Transferring refers to the ability to move from one area to another, such as from bed to wheelchair or wheelchair to toilet. A transfer bench can aid in some types of transfer.

A padded transfer bench is a great option to get from wheelchair straight to shower. Sturdy, but lightweight, these transfer benches are built to be mold and mildew resistant. The padding is a great feature to look for in a transfer bench as skin and muscles become much more sensitive as we age.

There are also transfer benches that come equipped with a built-in toilet seat. These are great for making these benches multipurpose. Not only does this toilet make the act of going to the bathroom easier, but the toilet opening allows a caregiver access for hygiene without one needing to rise from the bench.

A transfer bench is a great way to meet all of your bath safety needs.

Don’t Skimp on Bathtub Safety

December 17, 2010

When your mobility has been restricted by injury, illness or natural aging you can find some of the most basic tasks to be intimidating and even dangerous. This can go for every part of your daily life, whether it’s preparing food, getting into bed or trying to take a shower. Trying to shower with limited mobility is especially dangerous and shouldn’t be done without substantial safety measures being taken first. Some people may think that by placing a chair or stool in the shower that they’ll be fine, but this isn’t the case.

For one thing, normal everyday chairs and stools normally don’t have adjustable height seats or non-slip feet. Without the non-slip feet of an actual bath transfer bench you could be creating a potential safety disaster. And without an adjustable height you could be keeping your center of gravity too high or too low, causing you to place greater strain on your body and further threatening your mobility. The stakes are too high so don’t gamble with your safety when it comes to mobility and your daily routine.

Transfer Bench with Toilet

posted by ShowerBenchesPlus @ 9:06 AM
December 9, 2010

A transfer bench is a necessity for anyone confined to a wheelchair. By creating a bridge from the wheelchair to shower, a transfer bench enables you to shower with ease. Adding a toilet to the transfer bench makes the transfer bench even more efficient.

A combination toilet/transfer bench eliminates the need for two separate pieces of equipment. This is a good idea for several reasons. When you only have to purchase one item, you save money. Also one toilet/transfer bench combination takes up less space than a separate toilet and transfer bench.

Another advantage with the toilet/transfer bench combination is being able to take care of nature’s call without a rush to the toilet from the shower. The removable pan makes relieving oneself neater than having an “accident” on a traditional transfer bench.

Use of a toilet/transfer bench combination will make shower time more enjoyable for you and your caregiver.

One of the most terrifying scenes in movie history is the shower scene from Psycho. And while there is not a crazy man with a knife waiting outside the shower for you, the shower can be a dangerous place.

Use of a padded transfer bench is one way to make the shower less dangerous. By easing the transition from wheelchair to shower, there is less stress, and showering becomes more enjoyable.

By using a padded transfer bench, those in a wheelchair can experience a greater degree of independence. The padded transfer bench acts as a bridge from the wheelchair to shower making the transition smooth and possible without as much assistance. The degree of assistance needed will vary depending on the individual’s physical capabilities.

The padded transfer bench is a great way to make a dangerous shower safer. By using a padded transfer bench, it is possible to make showering stress free for you and your caregivers.
