Shower Bench and Grab Bar—Safety’s One-Two Punch

A shower bench and grab bar are the one-two punch that every bathroom requires to be a safety knockout. By implementing a shower bench, it is possible to remain seated throughout the bathing process. A shower bench is especially useful for the elderly, a woman in the last months of her pregnancy, or for someone recovering from a recent illness or surgery—basically anyone who can use some support to make shower time easier.

By pairing the shower bench with a grab bar, you will have a great way to stabilize your entry and exit from the shower, as well as offering leverage to help you raise and lower yourself form your shower bench. A smartly placed grab bar will really increase your feeling of well being in the shower and allow you to take your time meeting your hygiene needs.

A specific kind of grab bar called a tub rail is extremely beneficial in the bath. These super safety items attach directly to the side of the tub for easy entry and exit and are often height adjustable so that they are the perfect size for you no matter how tall you are. A tub rail is also portable so it can travel with you and make bath time easier whether you are in Berlin or Baton Rouge.

Transferred to Safety

There are several kinds of transfer benches available for those confined to a wheelchair. As a transfer bench enables direct access to the shower straight from the wheelchair, it is important to select the best one for you.

Padded transfer benches are great for those who need extra comfort on the seat area. Sliding transfer benches are ideal for those unable to slide on their own across the transfer bench due to discomfort or very limited function. The sliding transfer bench can make a caretaker’s job much easier, especially if a wife is caring for her much larger husband.

For those with space issues, there are transfer benches that attach directly to the side of the tub. With no legs in the walkway, tripping risk in the bathroom is also reduced.

Transfer benches with toilet seats are also space savers as they eliminate the need for both a single toilet chair and a separate transfer bench.

No matter which style you choose, you will not be disappointed in the safety benefits that your transfer bench will provide.

Slippery When Wet

Soap and water make the bathroom a pretty tricky room to maneuver. Add to them morning grogginess or a weakened physical condition, and you could end up with the perfect recipe for a fall.

The use of a shower bench, shower stool, or shower chair can virtually eliminate falls in the shower. Sturdy legs with slip resistant feet allow for showers in a safe environment.

A bath mat and grab bars will aid in a safe entry and exit from the shower. A towel bar is simply not strong enough to keep a falling body from reaching the floor. A bath mat gives a firm footing while you towel off after your shower.

Transfer benches allow for direct exchange from wheelchair to shower. There is no worry of missing the transfer bench and falling to the tub floor. There is no gap to fall into—just a straight route to a safer shower.

A little caution can go along way in making safety the number one purpose in your bathroom.

Often associated with priceless and exotic antiques, teak is considered a symbol of luxury by many. A close-grained wood with a high oil content that provides weather resistance, it also has tannic acid properties that combat fungi and insects and requires little to no maintenance. Teak has been used to construct ships for hundreds of years with great success, proving durable and weathering naturally to an even silver-gray color.

Due to its hardy nature, teak is now used in myriad outdoor products, including lawn furniture. Since its waterproof, teak products have also made their way into the bathroom. A teak shower bench, for example, won’t mold in the shower and is more comfortable than the plastic or metal options.

Shower Stools Day to Day

Shower StoolOur shower stool has become an integral part of our day to day lives. This morning, I was able to shave my legs without having to bend quite as far. I shaved without any nicks and did not have to perform a balancing act to get the job done.

My three year old daughter used the shower stool to reach the faucet so she could brush her teeth. The slip resistant feet make the shower stool much safer for this task than the plastic stool I had purchased at the dollar store—no more worries of the stool sliding out from under her on the ceramic tile floor.

My husband used the shower stool when he showered as well. As he recently had LASIK surgery, he is unable to open his eyes in the shower. He was able to get seated and shower without feeling uncomfortable.

My eight year old son also used the shower stool in the shower. The adjustable legs enabled him to lower the seat to the perfect height for his little legs.

What did we ever do without our shower stool?

A shower chair is the very best way to be safe inside the shower. Shower chairs have many great features that make them the ultimate shower safety tool.

Shower chairs have slip-resistant feet to keep the chair’s feet and you planted firmly in place. In terms of stability, four legs are always better than two.

Many shower chairs have arms to aid you in getting up and down from the shower chair. These arms take a top notch safety item and make it even better.

Shower chairs also offer a back for added support and relaxation. You can lean back without falling backward, and do not need to sit up arrow straight. You will be able to relax fully while getting clean.

Shower chairs are extremely affordable and offer an incredible increase in personal safety for a reasonable price. With styles to fit every taste and budget, a shower chair will bring bath safety to your home.

Safety for Seniors

Everyone has an elderly relative who is slowing down. You have accompanied your aging aunt or uncle from the car to the restaurant or have taken your parents to a doctor’s appointment. You have become aware of a senior citizen’s tendency to shuffle their feet to increase their feeling of security while walking.

These shuffling feet are an example of why certain safety measures must be taken to help make seniors safer.

1. Remove throw rugs to prevent tripping and slipping.

2. Place a bath mat at the entrance of the shower to stabilize entry and exit for the tub or shower.

3. Utilize a shower bench so that seniors can be seated and stable throughout their shower.

4. Install grab bars for a helping hand in and out of the shower.

The senior citizen in your life will appreciate your efforts to make them safer and you will appreciate the peace of mind that making your loved one safer will offer you.

Need a Lift?

Bellavita Auto Tub LiftThere is nothing more relaxing than a soak in a steamy, bubbly tub of water. Many physical therapies use water as a basis of treatment. What if limited mobility has made it impossible to use the bath tub without someone to help you get back out? What if you live alone and don’t have anyone to help you out of the tub?

A bath lift is the answer. With a bath lift, an individual sits in the seat and is lowered into the water. Many of these seats can reach depths almost to the bottom of the tub, so you have nearly all of the benefit of the water’s depth without the worry of how you are getting back out.

There are many styles of bath lifts available. Several designs offer rechargeable remote controls. Many bath lifts also offer reclining capabilities. Don’t give up on your bath time relaxation—get a bath lift today.

Grandparent-Proofing Our Home

Every couple of months my mom and dad come to visit from Arizona, and we always have to do a little prep work around the house to ensure they have a safe and happy visit. My dad has had to hip replacement and for the last eight years my mom has been using a walker, so mobility is definitely an issue. They both have trouble getting in and out of our cars, so we always rent a couple of compacts when they come up.

The bathroom is always an area of concern, and my parents have made it clear that they don’t want any kind of assistance. We purchased a couple of shower benches during their last visit so they could be comfortable in the shower and none of us had to worry about them slipping. Which reminds me: I also got a suction cup grab bar to help them get in and out—I had better go reinstall it before they get here.

Getting Old is A Pain

As we age, our bodies lose muscle. Not only do we have decreased physical strength, but we also become more sensitive to touch. My coworker’s elderly mother complains that even brushing her hair hurts. This extra sensitivity for pain is a reason why many bath safety products are designed with comfort in mind.

Padded transfer benches are available to assist from wheelchair straight to shower in complete ease. Thick padding covers the entire bench seating area for the utmost in comfort.

Transfer benches are also available to do the sliding for you. Sometimes the act of sliding across a bench can be very uncomfortable, especially to those without much muscle for support. By sitting in the specially designed seat, it is possible to slide into the shower position with no duress on a delicate derriere.

Shower chairs are also available with an extra padded seat and ergonomic design for a pain free shower experience. Don’t allow the fear of discomfort to limit your ability to take care of your basic hygiene needs. Padded transfer benches and shower chairs will make your shower pleasant.
